3 Ways to Better Your Relationship With Allah

Why does a good friendship end?

There may be a number of reasons, but chances are there was a lack of effort. Maybe you were the only one checking in, and they would respond to your messages late. Perhaps you tried finding a time to catch up, and they never followed through. Or perhaps, life got busy, and the friendship wasn't prioritized.

Whatever the reason may be, losing a good friendship is unfortunate. More important than any friendship you'll have with another person is your relationship with your Creator. Here are three tips on bettering your relationship with Allah.

1. Block off time for Allah.

Any good relationship requires an investment of time. If you're not already praying the five daily prayers, try starting with them. The word for prayer, salah, comes from a root in Arabic meaning 'to connect.' Knowing that this is the purpose of prayer, try to be consistent in praying what you can, and work your way up.

Your time for Him can also include other means. Block off a regular amount of time where you listen to lectures about Him or to watch spiritual reminders on YouTube.

2. learn about Allah.

Any Muslim would say that they love Allah, but you can't love someone you don't know. Spend some time learning about who Allah is by exploring His names, His attributes, and reflecting on stories in the Qur'an and seerah.

I would particularly recommend reading the Hadith Qudsi, which are a collection of narrations about Allah that the Prophet shared in his own words.

3. talk to Allah.

We all have a person in our lives that we share our secrets, frustrations, and news with. There may be moments, however, where we can't go to them. Perhaps something is particularly sensitive, and we're afraid they'll judge us. Maybe we're overwhelmed, and we can't find the words to communicate what we want to say. There is also the possibility that you need help, but they're not in a position where they can help.

These shortcomings aren't things we'd find in talking to Allah. He already knows the full context of everything that has happened. He also knows you fully, so no need to have your guard up.

As for communication, He already knows how you feel and what you're thinking. No need to find the words.

As for help, Allah is unlike any creation. Whereas the creation will find your asking for help annoying after a while, Allah LOVES when you turn to Him for help, and promises to answer the call of the caller when they call. He also is in control of everyone and everything, and is capable of doing anything.

Knowing this, why haven't you called Him?
